Community Action Failed Despite Proper Paperwork, Social Security Red Tape

Community Action Agency left me vulnerable during a utility crisis despite having proper paperwork – including documents with my valid Social Security number. And also had paperwork showing that I applied for a replacement card. Prior to my interview I was not told that I would have to have any other documents besides Social Security cards, which was not true. I had to go to two different locations to get other documents which cost me gas, money of which I did not have. With absolutely nothing being accomplished

My nightmare began with a pending gas disconnection notice. Seeking urgent assistance, I visited Community Action only to be denied help due to lacking a physical Social Security card – despite other acceptable documents. Letter from Social Security, W-2s, bank statements, leasing agreement, etc.

Adding insult, Social Security Administration's phone lines were jammed Finally getting through, they scheduled an appointment for *February 4th* – a date irrelevant to my *imminent disconnection*. Community Action knew this yet offered no temporary solution or advocacy on my behalf.

With proper paperwork submitted (including Social Security number), Community Action's rigid policy prioritized bureaucracy over people. Their inaction almost resulted in my family (including my kids) facing harsh winter without heat.

Warning to others: do not rely solely on Community Action for urgent assistance – explore alternative resources and advocate for yourself, as they may not advocate for you."

I never thought I would be in need of help at this time in my life, but the receptionist was very kind. The office was well organized with signs giving instructions and pamphlets for other types of help. The staff I met was efficient and kind as well. The LIHEAP program was a godsend.

I moved to Gadsden, Al in 2022 I got sick with covid-19.I had to stop working in the Health Field,I was directed to make a appointment with community Action.Well long story short The receptionist was caring while making my appointment. Once I went in for my appointment. I saw agent Mrs.Rowser she was caring as well.I say if you need help don't be afraid to make an appointment here.At community Action they will help you if funds are within there budget.Thank you all community action!!!

I was told that the assistance program was being reconstructed but in the reviews someone just said they received help two weeks ago. It’s not impossible for a reconstruction to happen in two weeks but the staff that answered my call was very rude. After she told me they couldn’t help I said thank and she just hung up. There was no courtesy at all.

I've been lucky and gotten help from the center. It's help me with my propane for 2 winters now. I really appreciate all the help I've received. Thanks a lot.

I love this place cause they help people I use to go here 1-2 a year but with this light bill this year they have really helped me and Terry out this year I I thank the girl that I get every time I go there she is so nice and sweet
