I visited the new shelter to ask what could be done for a stray dog in my neighborhood. It was a new, beautiful facility and the woman at the front desk was very kind and helpful in leading me in the right direction.

Very rude personal. The shelter is not taken care of and is in dire needs of a good cleaning. If humans can not take care if the shelter they are working out of, think of the attention they give to the animals. I rescued a dog off the street and brought it there because I have 2 other large dogs at home. The rude lady said because it had "Pit" in her, they they would put her down. I asked if they could just hold her for a few days to see if the owner could look for the sweet girl. Again, in a rude tone of voice "No! We can't take her, we can't tell you where else to take her either. If you leave her here, we will have to put her down.". Terrible and sad that this is what the Daphne shelter has to offer our helpless animals. Please somebody clean house at this facility. Find caring people who don't find it so easy as to say, " We will put down animals."

The Daphne Animal Shelter is where I found my little dog, Bailey. He’s a beautiful, sweet and a feisty mix breed who loves everybody. My experience with Glenda who works at the Animal Shelter was wonderful - from talking to her on the phone to meeting her the day I picked up my puppy on my birthday last December, 2018. She was so kind but also very concerned with every one of the animals under their care that it really impressed me that this was the place I wanted to get my dog from.
I’m so glad I went by the Daphne Animal Shelter because Bailey has truly been a blessing for me. Thank you for all you do!

I am really disappointed that Daphne has neglected their shelter. It’s a real shame that such a beautiful city has such a poor facility. Staff is uncaring and they seemed very disinterested in trying to find the best solutions for the animals. I’m not sure if it’s a personal matter or if it’s underpaid beat down by the system issue. I had spoke with them when I saw they were taking a cat from my neighborhood and I offered to pay to have it neutered in an attempt to see if it could be relocated or have a better chance at adoption. They informed me that if I had it neutered it would be legally my cat and my responsibility. I rented a live trap from them that day to catch the other stray before they caught it and asked them to inform me if the one they caught would be euthanized. They were nice and showed me how to set the trap up and were glad I successfully caught it and would take care of it. But the overall vibe of not taking me up on my offer to neuter the caught cat and just seeming like they really weren’t concerned was very disheartening. I know every cat and dog can’t be saved but I would hope the people in these positions would be more encouraging and proactive in their role. Facility was very run down and disappointing. I’m hoping Daphne will step it up with funding and make their animal shelter a more accurate representation of the city and community.

I’ve been to many animal shelters in the past, but never have I ever been to a shelter that is so small and terrible. The dogs areas for outside are less than a 3x3 ft area (which is terrible) and the cats don’t get any attention oncesoever I’m assuming since the kittens and cats screamed at me for attention. When I first walked into the shelter, I was so prepared to see all these dogs jumping and having food and water and just being safe, but half of them had no food, was sulking, and just looked like the life had been drained out of them completely. While I am grateful for organizations like these, I’m not grateful for an organization that doesn’t give the animal attention nor makes sure there’s food in the bowl at all times.

Let me start off by saying- IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE NO STARS I WOULD. I came early in the afternoon around 11:30 maybe and was just looking for a sweet medium sized pup. Walking in the woman in the front was polite enough however when I opened the door and saw how small of an area the dogs were in I was a little suprised. Though after all it is a shelter and meant to be somewhat “temporary”. The man who was cleaning the building came in and noticed I was looking at a little black pup. He told me she was about 4-5 months old and was found a stray but that he had also had a puppy very similar to her and thought she was a lab/dachshund with a little corgi. I asked if I could hold her and he said of course! And scooped her up and handed her to me. She was very sweet but didn’t move much. He told me was timid but I didn’t mind. I said I’d be back later or the following day to get her. I returned later around 2 or maybe 2:30 with my friend so she could help judge the dogs character as she has a puppy as well. Upon entering the dog room or hall as it seems more appropriate - we noticed my pup was not in her cage but then saw that she was in the small outdoor area accessible through the hole in the back wall. We tried to coax her out and to no avail. We went back to the polite enough receptionist to ask if she could remove the dog so we could hold her and look at her she said “No, if she isn’t coming out herself there’s no other way to get her.” We were shocked obviously because it’s pretty unrealistic and hard to believe that they don’t have 24 hour access to these animals. After she noticed my friend exiting the dogs cage she made a rather poor attempt to coax her out and then gave her a treat. Still, the dog wouldn’t budge. Under my breath I mentioned how I had wanted to hold her there one last time before taking her home the woman quickly returned with someone else who would get her from the outside. Why this was not the first method is beyond me, however she handed us the dog and we sat her down to see how she interacted with us and my two year old son. As me and my friend talked amongst ourselves about how lathargic and terrified she seemed the receptionist jumped in and told me “she’s just so tired, we’ve been so busy all week” (ignoring the fact that I had been told the complete opposite that same morning by someone else and that DOGS DONT SHAKE BECAUSE THEYRE TIRED) The other woman told me she was about 8/9 months old and was some other random mix of dogs. I couldn’t help but notice how sweet and non aggressive she was despite how scared she clearly was. I said I would like to take her home and asked how much they would charge me to get her and I was told 90 dollars with a voucher to get them spayed (as this is the AL law for rescue pets). This would be 90 dollars with NO MEDICAL AND SEVERE EMOTIONAL TRAUMA. Still I accepted. Though I still thought I would be warned about any health issues she had. Since I know nothing of dogs I decided to take her to the vet to get her shots and a general check up. At the appointment the vet told us she had hookworms and a bad skin infection. After dropping about 400 dollars on her she’s feeling better and improving but still won’t come out of my bathroom. I encourage everyone to get their pets from here ONLY TO SAVE THEM FROM THIS PLACE. She’s a very sweet dog but this place honestly doesn’t seem to care or know anything about these animals. The vet confirmed she was about 5 months old and lab/dashshund mix. Like I said. She’s a very sweet dog but you can absolutely tell that there have been ZERO ATTEMPTS made to socialize her and based on the way the our situation was handled I can see why. Very sad for he dogs. I even called my friend who has two American bullies to try to take the one they had at the shelter but she had no room:( don’t let the vet bills scare you away though. Believe me I would have much rather spent the money I’ve spent of her health and have gotten out of that place where surely she would have died in a corner than to buy a new puppy. SAVE THESE PUPPIES!

If only negative stars were available. Called for info and the person that answered was rude. I asked if she knew of places that maybe able to take 2 cats in that wasn't full. I understand that we dont live in the city limits but hell could at least be a little more nice about answering questions. If I plan to adopt in the future I won't be going to this shelter.

There is a lot of love and work that goes into the animals that come in there. The ladies that work here put love and attention into every animal that comes in and they make sure they are cared for until they go into a forever home. The workers are friendly and knowledgeable.
